Preparing for surgery

i. Once you have scheduled your surgery at our facility the surgical scheduling team from your ophthalmologist’s office will assist you getting prepared.

ii. We require that a comprehensive physical be performed by your primary care doctor and there may be pre-operative laboratory tests or an EKG. This check-up must be within 30 days of your scheduled operation.

iii. We will collect the following forms from the surgeon’s office to help us prepare for your visit. It is important that you complete these forms in a timely fashion.

iv. Our billing staff will investigate your insurance benefits and verify eligibility and coverage.

v. The schedules are built the week before and our staff will call you with your arrival time and pre-operative instructions a couple days before your surgery.

vi. No solid foods 8 hours prior to your arrival time. You are allowed to have clear liquids up to 2 hours prior to your arrival. Clear liquids include water, black coffee, tea, apple or cranberry juice or ginger ale. No dairy products or pulpy juice.

vii. On the morning of your surgery, we ask that you leave any personal belongings or valuables at home or in your vehicle. We will provide you with a new mask upon entering our facility.

viii. However, if you use a rescue inhaler, please remember to bring it with you the day of surgery. You may also wear your glasses, if needed.

ix. Please take all your usual medications unless your primary care doctor told you otherwise.

During your stay

i. Upon arriving to the Center, you will need to call us from inside your vehicle at: 978-632-6674 option 1 to let us know that you have arrived. The administrative staff will conduct a brief phone screening and then invite you to the door.

ii. Once we admit you to the facility the nursing staff will guide you through the entire process and monitor your vital signs.

iii. Depending on the procedure you may receive multiple eye drops. All patients admitted for a procedure must have an IV placed, even if not receiving anesthesia.

iv. You will meet with an anesthesiologist who will review your health history and answer any questions you may have regarding anxiety and/or discomfort.

v. Your ophthalmologist will see you before your procedure and answer any questions you may have.

vi. Your surgery will take place on one of our two ORs or in our laser suite.

After your surgery

i. Once your surgery is finished the staff will notify your transportation that you are out of surgery and will be available for pick up in about 15-20 minutes.

ii. A nurse will continue to monitor your vitals and review your post-operative instructions. Everything will be provided to you in writing.

iii. A snack and a beverage will be provided.

iv. A patient survey will be sent home with each patient to help us improve the care we provide to our patients.

v. Once you are stable and are discharged by anesthesia a staff member will escort you to your ride’s vehicle.

*It is important that you have a responsible family member or friend accompany you home. There will be no exceptions to this rule.
